1967: Abracadabra, A Diploma!

At Wheaton College commencement, 1967, an unidentified man performs a magic trick behind Wendy's diploma, with Jean and Fred watching. Amazing how much my daughter, Emily, looks like Wendy at this young age. And how about that Zebra-looking dress off to the right? Very fashionable for Norton, Massachusetts in 1967.

The unidentified young man was Charlie Fassett who was a major influence in my life at the time. He had arrived on campus our freshman year and was the choral director. On arrival at Wheaton my freshman year, I intended to play field hockey (I had played in high school and was a pretty good right half back - Jean had played full back and goalie at Wheaton!). My frosh room mates all wanted to go out for the freshman choir - so I went along. We all got in and by the time hockey started, Charlie Fassett had me hooked on singing. I thank him for this wonderful gift of learning to sing choral music that I still love and enjoy to this day.
